Yew & Blue Waterfall Desk

Yew & Blue Waterfall Desk

The brief

Founder of By Charles, Charles Williams, made this desk to advance his skills beyond traditional table-making. He wanted to incorporate resin, not only for its look, but also to save timber that would otherwise have been burnt. He chose blue resin to represent falling water, along with complementary pinks, reds and purples to set it off. The Waterfall Desk is currently on long-term loan at a stately home in the south of England.

The base

Charles made this piece into a waterfall using that part as one of the legs.

The reaction

“That’s exactly what we wanted… those colours, just look at that detail. I love the texture of the oak.” – Client

Infusing and narrating

If you wish, you’ll be shown how to pour your own resin, creating textures and layers that become a timeless story of its creation as it takes shape before your eyes.

It will arrive with you, accompanied by a collection of images which tell the story of your furniture’s journey from idea through to creation. We’ll give you an aftercare box, with full instructions on how to care for it. Your fully bespoke piece of furniture is now yours to treasure and enjoy.
Listening and crafting
This is when the magic truly begins. We listen intently to our selected piece of wood to fully understand its directions, noting every knot, flaw and quirk and working along the grain to showcase every aspect of its beauty. Using precision tools and a meticulous eye, every curve is executed with fastidious attention to detail.
Perfecting and polishing
Adding final polishes and that extra touch of finesse is a vital part of our process, and we don’t stop until the piece is flawless to the keenest of eyes. With the resin cured, we’ll sand and refine it with precision tools until your furniture passes Charles’s exacting standards. Then, we add your custom-designed metal base as a final touch.
